Volunteer Opportunities

Are You Interested In Volunteering With BOF?

Berkshire Opera Festival offers a variety of volunteer opportunities.  Donating your time helps BOF keep our promise of fiscal responsibility while giving you the chance to interact with our exceptional artists and patrons –

and have a great time doing it!

Ushers help to keep BOF’s performances running smoothly and to create an inclusive, welcoming environment for our audiences. Plus, you can see a performance for free! Responsibilities and requirements include:

  • Arrive one hour before performance start time to help with stuffing programs, setting up stations, and making sure the theatre is ready to receive our patrons.

  • Check-in audience members, distribute programs, help patrons locate their seats if they need assistance.

  • Direct patrons to the entrances, exits, or restrooms

  • Assist with tidying and collecting of any unwanted programs and litter after the performance ends

  • Ushers must be physically able to stand for 30-45 minutes at a time, walk up and down stairs, and navigate the theater/performance space.

  • Dress code: please dress in all black or black and white. BOF will also provide a pin-style badge that will identify you as an usher to audiences.

  • Due to the limited number of usher positions available at each performance, usher groups are limited to two persons per party. A waitlist will be established once all ushering spots have been filled. Please only sign-up for performances you are confident you will be able to usher/attend as a courtesy to other prospective ushers.

Regarding COVID-19

  • BOF has established a mandatory vaccination policy for all company members, including volunteers and ushers. Ushers must certify that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and be willing to show BOF management a copy of their CDC Vaccine Record Card if requested.

  • Ushers will interact in close proximity to audience members (i.e., no social distancing) in order to distribute programs or assist with seating.

  • Those ushering for our indoor performances are required to wear face masks regardless of their vaccination status.

Special Event Assistance

BOF periodically needs assistance at fundraising events, patron events, artist receptions, and other functions.

Some tasks and responsibilities may include:

  • Helping set up for events in private homes or commercial spaces. This might include assembling food trays, table settings, beverage set-up, and things of a similar nature.

  • Welcoming and checking in guests

  • Helping serve food and drinks during the event and assisting with clean-up after the event

  • May require: standing or sitting for long periods of time; lifting heavy objects; picking up or receiving deliveries

Artist Welcome Team

Our artists travel from all over the country and globe to perform with BOF, and we want to ensure they have a very warm welcome throughout their stay in the Berkshires. Join our artist welcome team to help receive our artists and help them feel at home!  Duties may include:

  • Pick up artists from the airport/train station or assist them in retrieving rental cars

  • Deliver our welcome packets and gifts to our artists upon arrival

  • helping them navigate the local community

  • Bring refreshments to artist rehearsals (which is also a wonderful way to get an insider view of preparing for a show)

BOF is always searching for shared and private spaces for BOF artists to call home during our summer season.  Depending on the artist or staff position, housing needs may span from just a few days to the entire months of July and August.  Some artists do have stipends available to help offset the cost of living, but as the Berkshires continue to grow as a destination location, finding secure, comfortable, and affordable seasonal housing has become more challenging each year.  We are in need of both free housing and access to quality, paid short-term rentals depending on the needs and interests of the homeowner.

If you or someone you know has the ability to accommodate BOF artist or production staff member in your home or guest house during the months of July and/or August within a 40-minute commute to Great Barrington, this volunteering option could provide a meaningful contribution to BOF.

Community Outreach Assistance

  • Distribution of marketing materials (postcards, posters, etc.) in your local neighborhood/community

  • Connecting us with your local media for free advertising, interviews, general press

  • Connecting BOF with local business owners about sponsorship, program advertising, and other collaborative opportunities

  • Assist with outreach to local community groups

  • Recruiting other volunteers

General Office Assistance

Volunteer with our administrative staff at our home office in Great Barrington and take a hands-on role in BOF’s daily activities. Help is most often requested during the summer season, but we do periodically have projects that require assistance throughout the rest of the year.   Duties may include:

  • Answering telephones and directing phone calls

  • Assisting patrons with ticketing questions

  • Preparing mailings and information packets

  • Creating documents, filing, and organizing
